Available schoolwide tutoring schedule
Student Learning Center (SLC), provides BHS students daily access to a computer lab, tutorials, and counseling services focusing on study skills, academic support and advising. CAL student volunteers are available for tutoring in the Student Learning Center (room D-221) Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. BHS Teachers are the first resource for academic assistance. Many teachers provide tutoring before school, at lunch or after school. Check with your individual teacher for their tutoring hours. Teacher phone numbers and emails address can be found in the student directory as well as on PTSA website, www.bhs.berkeleypta.org.
BHS Library has a core collection of books and internet access (41 workstations and 2 dedicated search terminals) for students who have returned a signed Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) form. Comfortable seating is provided in the periodical/newspaper lounge. The library is open before, during and after school from 7:30am to 4:30 pm.

Writer Coach Connection trains community volunteers to provide one-on-one coaching support to students on their writing assignments. BHS English and history teachers schedule meetings with WCC writing coaches in from H102 during the school day and at lunch. In addition to classroom support, coaching is available to all BHS students on an appointment or drop-in basis during the lunchtime "Writer's CafÈ" in H102. The CafÈ offers snacks and drinks, and CafÈ regulars often enjoy working with the same coach to successfully complete writing assignments. Email contact is writercoachconnect@yahoo.com
Mentoring for Academic Success (MAS), a program run by the Multicultural Institute, helps at-risk students prepare for college. MAS concentrates on West and South Berkeley but tutoring is open for all students. Tutors include community volunteers, CAL and GTU students and former program participants. Drop-in tutoring is available in the Student Learning Center (room D-221) Monday and Wednesday from 3:15 to 6:00 pm . Contact Matt Ellsworth, Program Coordinator, at 848-4075, ext. 13.
Academic Pathways (AP Project), offers academic support and tutoring services for under-represented students to increase their eligibility for four year colleges and their enrollment in Advanced Placement and honors classes. Course based study sessions are provided in the classroom after school by trained tutors, several times a week. Individual tutoring, mentoring and counseling services are also available. RISE (Responsibility, Integrity, Strength, Empowerment), is an after-school leadership program that helps minority high school students succeed in school and in college. It offers tutoring and extra-curricular activities Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 pm in the school cafeteria. Students must apply for this program. Y Scholars, is jointly sponsored by the downtown YMCA and UC Berkeley to prepare low income and first generation college bound students to pursue a post secondary school education. The Y Scholars program provides college mentoring, weekly academic support groups, and after-school tutoring in the school library Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. As an incentive to meet the program goals, students in Y Scholars receive a free membership in the YMCA. Students must apply for this program. Early Academic Outreach Project (EAOP) is a UC-sponsored program to help students from under-resourced communities prepare for college. It offers pre-college advising and academic enrichment programs, including Saturday and summer school. Students must be enrolled in Y Scholars in order to participate. Contact Amy Lee at 643-2364.
Education Guidance Center (EGC) is a UC sponsored program to help low-income, first generation students obtain a college education. Counselors meet students, individually and in groups, twice a month for academic advice, transcript evaluation, college campus field trips and assistance with college and financial aid applications. English Language Learners (ELL) is a goal-setting academic program for ELL students with GPA's lower than 2.0. Youth advisors monitor the goal of raising the GPA while reducing absenteeism, tardiness, and disciplinary referrals. Some students meet weekly with youth advisors and receive referrals for additional services. Basic ELL Tutorial is an after-school program offering homework assistance to beginning and intermediate level ELL students. Teachers provide ongoing educational advice. Contact Nancy Isaksen, ELL Education Advisor, in room C-116.
ELL High School Exit Exam Class is a period 7 class for ELL students graduating in 2006 or later who are at risk of not passing the state mandated high school exit exam. Contact Heidi Ramirez-Weber in room C-324.
Pre-Engineering Partnerships (PEP), sponsored by UC Berkeley College of Engineering, holds math study circles after school for enrolled students, with an emphasis on those who would be the first generation in their family to go to college. Private Tutoring Resources
The Berkeley Parents Network is an electronic parent-to-parent advice newsletter organized for families in the Berkeley area. This volunteer network includes not only a bi-weekly online newsletter but also a Berkeley Parents Network website where newsletter advice and recommendations are archived.
